They are the same.

After the W.Wars, in the UK, anything remotely called German was shunned, and the GSD was renamed the Alsatian. Nowadays people aren't as sensitive, so the breed has reverted to being called the German Shepherd. Some people do still prefer to call them Alsatian though.
