Definitely. I remember a man telling me he was a heavy drinker (translation = alcoholic) but he just could not stop. The proof that it is an illness is not the quantity, but how much you need it and cannot do without it. Ask any person you suspect is an alcoholic if they don't prefer a soft drink/tea or whatever.
