Burning books as an act of censorship or political theatre? I see no reason to ever promote willful ignorance or jackboot authoritarian control. Burning books to clear out the pulp that might have found its way into one's own personal library? Still, no. They can be recycled!

Burn books? Hell, why not burn authors and thinkers, and outspoken or educated people? Then it wouldn't be necessary to burn the books. We could just pulp them and make them into cereal boxes and such.

Definitely a NO. Giving them away is already heartrending--to burn them is horribile dictu!

Hi pukirahe
absolutely yes! If The Internet is a book then policing it is necessary. I care for freedom of expression too much to see it debased. Abuse takes many forms and is a dangerous entertainment. Is inhumanity acceptable in this age?

People burn books? Like, in a fire? I've never heard of such a thing... I've heard of people burning flags, but not books.

Absolutely not!! If you don't like the book, don't bloody read it, eh? Even books like Mein Kamph shouldn't be burned, hateful, racist, barking, whatever. I'd never read it, as i disagree with it's sentiment, it's vital in a free country to have free speech - even if that speech is unpopular. Start banning stuff and it's a slippery slope - next time it could be your 'pleasure' they prohibit, until one day the clocks'll strike 13....Censorship NEVER a good idea IMO.

No, no. no. Not ever. Even the most profane trash has to have its place, if only to affirm our aversion to profane trash! Burning books is a form of censorship - and there is nobody on earth qualified to act as Censor for the rest of us.

You mean like in a protest? Why wouldn't it be? If a book was published that said all women should never leave the home and women with careers were evil, I highly doubt very many people would shrug their shoulders at it. People would complain and protest, and likely burn whatever copies they could find. It's freedom of speech.

Now... should the government burn books as a form of censorship? Absolutely hell no.

It has never been acceptable, it is always used as a tool by some to outrage or conspire against others. It is a hateful thing to do, rarely if ever it was used for the benifet of others. but I do not know of any book burnings that were not the result of hatered or a power play by someone.
