Democracy is definitely NOT an illusion but it requires the involvement of an electorate of thoughtful and responsible individuals in order to be effective and responsive to the people's needs. If the public is uninvolved then the money and power interests get THEIR way.

Pretty much. That;s why most democracies end up as two party systems. You only have to corrupt two sets of politicians and get them to play musical chairs every 3 to 7 years as long as you own both parties you can get them to feign division and do their hollywood act while at the end of the day they all go to their cushy masonic lodge and laugh at the gullibility of the masses.
