Resolved Question

Is "I was raised that way" really an excuse?

Many people use the fact that they were raised to be racist or prejudice (or anything else, really) as an excuse to continue being that way.

Sometimes I suppose.

I mean, really if you were RAISED by a demented mother or father who constantly pounded it into your head to be racist or to have some other ****** up beliefs.... You are probably going to have a hard time later in life when it comes to thinking for yourself in those matters.

It may be an excuse but it is not an excuse for you to be judgemental. Maybe people are also worried about if their relatives are racist or against gay orientation etc. that they will be penilised.

No, my dad was prejudice and I have had friends who were all different races! I love people don't care about their color of their skin or their culture, I find them beautiful and facinating!

No, my father is a racist, homophobic, male chauvenist bigot who 'force fed' me his opinions until we had an almighty argument when I was 15. I don't hold any of his views & we hardly speak anymore but that's his choice I still love him, he's my Dad

I was raised that way, but I never had a reason to be angry or hateful towards others, so I never became racist. My parents were discriminated against by the blacks and Latinos in the area who made their lives really hard, so I fully support their feelings for I know what they have been through. I do not care what anyone says, sometimes people really do have their reasons for their feeling racist, so I can only speak for myself when I say that the way I was raised has not effected my feelings on racism.

It's not an excuse. It's a ploy to put it on somene else and not take responsibility for your own actions. When I hear that, I wanna laugh. I think we know better. Nobody has to be the way their parents brought them up. When we're young, we're growing into the adults we're going to be, but then there comes a time when we go our own way in our thinking. We will be in charge of your own life so how do we want to live it? Some parents can be such jerks. Do we want to be jerks or do we want to be better than the way we were raised? I vote for being better than the way I was raised. If a person REALLY wants to be different, then WE decide what kind of awesome individuals WE want to be.
