California has a very broad spectrum of climates. It has a very long coast line which runs North & South, so the weather is different up & down the coast. It also has deserts and mountains, which have completely different climates. The further in land you go from the coast, the less it varies from day to night. On the coast, like in San Francisco, it can be warm and sunny during the daytime, but gets very cold at night, even in the summer. The weather in Southern California is much different. It can be hot even at night there. If you think the sun shines all the time in California, try going to Truckee, CA in the winter. You'll freeze your *** off.

It depends on where you live in Cal. It snows in some places in the state, but in So. cal it is usually very warm year round.

I believe the areas you are talking about, such as San Diego, have what is termed a "Mediterranean Climate". California really is a crapshoot. I was stationed in Twenty-nine Palms, CA (high desert) for a while when I was in the military. In the winter in particular, trying to put everything you needed in one pack was a nightmare. There were days when it was 85 degrees at midday and 30 degrees at midnight.

Here on the So Cal coast, it will be temperate year round... Hotter in the summer inland, colder at night. It does rain, but the last time here was about a month ago, and immeasurable. They say 15" a year is normal, but I think it happens about 20% of the time. Ten REAL rain days a year here is a guess...

California is not a single place -- there's many different regions to it. Some may be warm all the time -- I heard that San Francisco usually is.

I grew up in the Mojave desert (southern Cali). It was hot most of the time, but the winters were surprisingly chilly and we would even get a sprinkling of snow most winters.

It is most of the time in Southern California, we have a very mild winter. You asked why? Well...I guess it's because this is Nirvana :-)
