I'm that could be a nervous disorder. I can react appropriately when I hear bad news, but I can't tell it without laughing. I never tell anyone that a friend or family member or a pet, has died. People think I am so callous because I laugh. I don't feel like laughing, but it's a nervous thing.

I saw an episode of House M.D. where a man had a disorder that caused him to smile instead of frown when he was angry or upset. (Most of the medical cases on that show were derived from real diseases and disorders that people had) This disorder is probably not the case with your friend. It's more likely he was thinking about something else that made him smile before he answered you. Or, he really doesn't care.
