You might as well not take the anti-depressant if you drink. It counteracts the positive benefit of the drug.

I’m on an anti-depressant for depression and anxiety. I don’t drink much anymore because of the effect of mixing drugs and alcohol. When I do drink I get drunk easily and if I get depressed the depression hits hard.

Short answer is no. But, I will tell you that I have seen people that do and they seem to get drunk easier and if they drink a lot they get extremely depressed. So be careful.

I don't know. Why not ask your doctor or pharmacist. Be sure to define "moderation."

It is a very dangerous thing to do not only for you but for those around you. If a depressive episode hits while drinking it will intensify and your actions may hurt you and others. It is never a good idea to mix alcohol and drugs of any kind.

I'm on an anti depressent and an anti anxiety. I don't drink much, but when I do, I will usually have 2 cran. vodkas and no more. I do get buzzed off only two, and if I drink more, I start to feel really light headed and icky. It actually makes me not want to drink at all. But I will on certain occassions.

I'm on anti depressants & drink a fair amount but I have learnt the hard way to stay off spirits now it's just wine.
I know it isn't the answer to make me feel better, but I love the bandaid solution....

Officially, no.

In practice, yes. Of course the key word is moderation. And you absolutely cannot drink and drive, because the combination of alcohol and antidepressants will make you drowsy.

My consultant actually told me it's okay to go out for a drink with friends because the benefits of the social contact outweigh the depressant effect of a small amount of alcohol.

Just don't overdo it though. Remember, most suicides take place under the influence of alcohol.

What does the instruction on the pill bottle say? Do not take alcohol with this drug?

I have never been on anti-depressants; but I used to work for a pharmaceutical company, and it is known that alcohol enhances anti-depressant drugs' action - how much depends on the drug, the person's body, and the amount of alcohol.

It is wise to keep off alcohol while taking anti-depressants.

Be kind to your liver and nervous system - they may not throw a complete wobbly, but alcohol puts a strain on them; and they have to last you your whole life! One of the first things doctors warn against if you are in any sort of medical trouble is to cut the alcohol and the smoking. There must be a reason, and there is; these things impose a strain, which makes healing harder.

You will feel all messed up a few hrs after and the whole next day if you mix uppers and downers like that. Been there. Unfortunately you should stay away from booze until you feel well enough to go off your medication. Even one drink can throw your system for a loop.

I drank once while on anti-depressants. I was drunk after 1 drink, and couldn't even finish my third. Personally, I wouldn't do it again, as it affected me way too much.

I take Pristiq for my menapause and I have had a couple. I wouldnt make a habit of doing it all the time - it would make your meds not work I dont get drunk either.

It's risky, to say the least! Anti-depressants intensify the drink twice it's normal potency. I was on Paxil, many years ago, and had three beers... in essence, I had six and one half beers, for the medication doubled it and just a bit more. I spent a night so sick and my family was worried that I was not going to make it through the night. So again, it's risky! :-o

What are you people taking? There must be quite a difference in medications. I take an anti-depressant and drink daily. Have for years. Ain't dead yet so far as I know.
