Is it right to say The Moon is a Planet in a binary planetry system with The Earth not a true moon?

maybe the argument is around the moon being a planet which struck The Earth and then entered a binary planet relationship which is not an orbit because the moon has been moving gradually away from the earth and will one day return to orbiting around the sun independently again?

The moon doesn't conform to the International Astronomical requirements that a celestial body must conform to in order to be considered a planet.

But generally speaking, I suppose yes, it could. The Earth and other planets could be seen as moons of the Sun and the sun could be seen as a moon of the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy.

I don't know. I haven't really given it much thought. I'm still trying to determine the difference between an asteroid and a hemorrhoid.

I suspect that a "binary" planetary system would require both the Moon and the Earth to orbit each other (like two people on opposite sides of a merry-go-round). Although the earth is affected by the Moon's gravity (with regard to tides and such), it's not enough force to pull the Earth into a binary orbit.

The Moon is considered a moon simply because (by definition) it orbits a planet. The Earth is considered a planet because (by definition) it orbits a star. Hope that helps. :)

No. The primary definition of a planet is that it orbits a star not another 'planetary body'. This was part of the argument about changing the status of Pluto. Luckily... common sense won the day and we went from 9 planets down to 8 otherwise we would have had to go UP to about 17 (I think). Now we refer to Pluto, Ceres, Eris, and the others as 'Dwarf Planets'... really they are just hell on wheels large asteroids as they aren't capable of sustaining any kind of atmosphere, but 'dwarf planet' was the decision made. Remember there are at least 4 'moons' in the solar system that if they orbited the Sun would be planets because they are larger than Mercury (hell, Ganymede is nearly the size of Venus).

wow - that's a very deep question that i can't answer! I know there are at least 3 moons though; we can only see one, so the binary theory doesn't look so possible when you know that. But as im no physicist, or astronomer i have no clue really. :) Let me know if you find out, lol x

There are those, of course, who say that the moon is a space ship that has been made of a hollowed-out planetoid or some such to disguise the fact of its origin and purpose... Others suppose the moon was generated as a spin-off from a planetary collision with Earth.
How would you define "a true moon"?

You're definitely going to have to provide details of where you got that idea. Right now it sounds so completely preposterous that it's nto worth answering. :)

The Moon is The Moon. Therefore it defines the concept of one planetary body orbiting another.

If it's right, it's right to say it.

The moon stabalises the earth and stops it from wobbling. Without the presence of the moon life may not exist on this planet. The Earth is at a distance from the sun which encourages life. Any closer or further away and life would not exist. Saturn tends to draw to itself asteroids that would otherwise hit this planet.

There sure is more to life and our existence than something that occurred due to accident.

i had fun reading SF book where people on a planet colonized their satellite. generations later, colonists used to name the planet "moon" . It's all conveniences. If a majority defines something as "X" , then it becomes X. Right now, the Moon is no planet, and this is not a binary planetary system.

No, because the Moon orbits us, not the Sun. And true, it IS pulling away, but all the moons in our Solar System are doing that with some exceptions (Demos, for one). No, the reason why some alien visitor might think the Earth is part of binary planet system is because of the size of the moon compared with the size of the Earth. Most of the moons compared to the planets they orbit are very small, but to be fair, most of the planets that have them are giant gas planets. With the exception of Pluto, whose moons are huge compared to Pluto (Of course, now ''they'' are saying Pluto isn't a planet any more, stupid *****)

Oh, one reason more why the Moon and Earth aren't a Binary Planetary System: the two planets of one would have BOTH planets orbiting EACH OTHER. The Moon orbits the Earth, but the Earth only orbits the Sun (and Neil de Grasse Tyson of the New York Museum Space Section thinks all the Heavens orbit HIM. Stupid twit)
