Is it wrong to hide the real me from my family?

I don't know why, but I have never felt like I could be completely myself around my family. I long to be myself around them, but I don't know what to do since I've hidden myself away for so long. I want to let them know my dreams, my fears, my desires, my wishes, my dreads... but I feel like I can't... and I just don't know what to do...

Wow, I have felt this way so many times. And, I did keep the real me from them. Do I feel it was wrong? No, but I wish I would have had the courage to show them who I was. They are just getting to know me now, slowly I show them myself. Not that I have anything to hide, I just feel they are very different from me and instead of risking being made to feel different or having their scrutiny I kept my life private. At times it has caused me pain and I wish I could have felt at ease being open with them. Now, that they see ME they still love me. I would consider opening up a little at a time. You are still young and you don't want to lose so many years like I did.

So, at the risk of becoming very unpopular.... No, it's not wrong. A lot of the time it is required.
The idea that you'll always be accepted and forgiven by your family is a beautiful idea, but an idealistic one at best.

You know... deep down... what your family's reaction would be to your secret. If you can live with that then share it... If not, then don't.

Families splinter on a regular basis for all sorts of reasons. If they do turn their backs on you over this issue (whatever it is) then it is their issue... not yours. Families should be what the other posters have said... accepting, forgiving, loving, etc.. but in truth many times they are not.

If you want to share with them and you're concerned, start slowly and do it with some little things, like some dreams you have. Every so often, share your true self. You family is where your source of love and support should come from... they will love you... they may not always agree, but they will love you.
So go ahead, start small, but start opening up and give your family the gift of the real you!!

I don't think it's wrong...I think it's sad....

Get some counseling, so that you can learn how to open up and share this with them....I am sure they would love to know the real you....

depends on a couple things. if they will accept you for who you are, or if you give a damn.

Your family is your family and most likely will love you no matter who you are.

At the end of the day, it is your family who is always there for you. Be yourself...they will deal with it...and it will be ok. Trust me on this one. There is no love like the love a parent has for a child. We may not always agree, but you are our kid..and we love unconditionally...always.

You don't have to hide your real self to anyone else on earh. The self that fears and that must hide sorrowfully is not your true self. Your true self is noble and glorious.
Type "know yourself" in any search boxes of Google, Yahoo, MSN... you will find thousands of Websites serving this purpose.

You know, you really should give them a chance to get to know the real you before you judge them! You have to realize that it takes time to get to know people, especially when you think that you already know them! Give them a chance and if they react badly, then you need to just give them time to adjust. That is all you can do. If you keep hiding from them, you will grow to resent them even more then you obviously already do.

No, whats wrong is a family who will so easily reject one of their own based on some pre-determined beliefs.

It's only wrong for you my dear. It's not only wrong, but harmful to your core, your being, your heart and soul. Be who you are. I have found that being who I am pleases me, and if it doesn't please someone else, well then............they aren't anyone I need in my life. Including family. It can be tough, but it's worse living a lie. I have never been able to do that for the sake of someone else.
