Resolved Question

Is it wrong to play off peoples weaknesses?

At work, is it wrong to try to get ahead by playing off others weak points?
Ok everyone is taking this all wrong. I'm not saying I go to work and wait for someone to fall down so I can walk over them. I'm saying if my boss comes to me complaining that another employee is slacking and on the edge of losing his job, I make sure to do the things my boss is complaining about so that I can keep my job. If someone is always giving away shifts, I pick them up. Yes, it makes me look good but it also puts money in my pocket. I'm not intentionally making anyone look bad or pushing them down to get over them. I'm doing my job better then them and doing more.

The first thing to do when assessing this question is to throw out the word "wrong". There are no "rights" and "wrongs" in life, merely actions. Right and wrong are just words that complicate our decision-making processes and cause people to feel guilt...and then go out and make more decisions that just serve to screw and perplex themselves.

When you get "right/wrong" out of the way, now you can attack the *real* cause of concern for you, It's either:

1. Will karma fu(k me and cause bad things to happen to me?
2. Will I go to hell?
3. Will people still like me if I do this?
4. Will I still like myself?

No scientific studies have been done to prove the existence of karma. That many "bad" people have "good luck" is well-documented. Hell is one of those things you can worry about later. And "people" really don't matter.

Thus I suspect the real question is #4. And this is up to you. Feel a sense of right/wrong in what you do, and you will likely hate yourself for any attempt to play off people's weaknesses. Take your actions as just that - a series of actions - and there will be no "consequences". Just actions. You will do, and be done to. Life moves on.

I would have to say yes. When someone has a weak point in the work place I try to help them. I am not a kiss butt, never have been and never could be to get ahead and I could not do anything to my co-worker that would be negative, mean or to get ahead. I think it all depends like I said on your confession how and what is being done.

It's just fu*king work.
1. Go to work
2. Do your job
3. Collect your check
4. Go home and live your life, possibly develop a hobby.

It need not be any more complicated than that. Why do people take work so ******* seriously? Some like their jobs but the people who like their jobs would never try to play on someone's weaknesses to get ahead. But most don't like their jobs...so why put so much energy into it?

No, it's not wrong. It's part of the game.

The whole point of work is to get ahead, make more money and try not to go insane from boredom.

Depends.

If that's the only way to ensure that it doesn't happen to you... then not at all.

I mean... It's not really "right" or "good" to do that... but there's no room left in the world for the person who does all the "good" or "right" things. Those people get left in the dust...

At the end of the day truth be told, everyone is (and rightfully needs to be) out for number one.

It's just how things work.

oh wow. i didn't read the explanation part lol. i think its not necessarily playing off of people's weaknesses as it is people take advantage of every opportunity in the workplace. i mean, if you don't seize the moments then someone else will. its a cutthroat dog eat dog world in corporate america. survival of the fittest.

I couldn't live with myself, so i wouldn't do it. I think it's a dark and friendless road to go down.

Probably. Your manager probably likes it though it is truly unethical.

In sport it's okay. In life it's not okay, unless they are your sworn enemy.

Since you are so aware of all this you sound as if you are doing it out of bad mindedness. Everyone wants to get ahead but not at the expense of others.

Wrong and immature. Human capacities are beyond our knowledge; they are weak on some aspects and strong on many other fields. The proper attitude is to encourage people in developing their known and latent potentialities.
