Is Obama the greatest public speaker ever?

JFK, Martin Luther king were very good speakers. Different time and maybe more meaningful messages. But the way Obama speaks and how he presents is something else. Every speech at the end he goes into this mode that is like other wordly.

I guess some people talk in such a way that it connects with your heart, and you feel moved by it.

He's genuine. And that's such a rarity in elected officials that it stuns most of us when we hear him speak.

He is incredibly poised and charming, he certainly does have a charismatic appeal. (in a GOOD way)

Absolutely not. The greatest public speaker of all time would actually believe what he or she espouses and not customize their speeches to garner public support as suggested by the latest public opinion polls. Obama's speech delivery is professional and well rehearsed. Unfortunately, he is unable to bring to fruition all those popular ideas he speaks about.

Obama is alright as a speaker, but I wouldn't say he's the greatest speaker *ever*. That would be going too far. Of course, we have never heard some of the greatest speakers, who were around during times when they didn't record speeches, but as for recent speakers, I think (ironically) that the greatest speaker is someone who was terribly camera shy and hated speaking in public. That speaker would be Vaclav Havel, (the late, great, former Czech President). His manner could be very awkward sometimes, but the words he spoke were poetic and truthful. He wrote ALL of his own speeches, which were so beautiful they were almost unbelievable, coming from a modern man of our times. His words spoke about the human responsibility for the world and man's inner greatness, the power of the little guy and universal human values. I recommend reading his books, which have some of his speeches published. His speeches are truly works of art. Too bad he isn't around anymore to write new ones. Unfortunately he died recently, but he was an amazing leader and an amazing speaker. A lot of people couldn't get past his outward mannerisms, his shyness, the way he looked at the floor and stammered sometimes, etc. But if you listened to his words, they were so beautiful. So that's why I think he was one of the greatest speakers ever, if not *the* greatest speaker in modern times, although that would be a stretch to say that anyone could be *the* greatest ever. There have been a lot of inspiring speakers.

JFK was good, Mao, Gandhi and Reagan were great, but I think it's a matter of taste. MLK speeches were wonderful, but I honestly don't have the patience to appreciate his style. Hitler is regarded as a great speaker too, but i find his speeches unpersonable.

In 2008 Obama captured people in a way I've never seen before, so there's no doubt he's a good speaker. But he's also charismatic and runs a cutthroat campaign. "Greatest" speaker would be a matter of opinion.

Obama does have his rhetoric in place. He knows how to forcefully interject phrases like "change" and "going forward", whenever he gives a speech. That gets people fired up, even though what he said is void of substance.

I think he's a good one but the best... no... the best public speakers have managed to convince nations from following their Ideas even thought with a neutral look at it everyone would have seen they were wrong...

you don't need to be the best speaker to confince people from what they know is right...

No, he's horrible at it. He's good at saying what the delusional voters want to hear.

sorry to break it to you, but that's what one makes a good speaker... getting people to belive in you and what you say and agree... not the ones who naturally do but the others

No, it's the imbecilic voters who believe him, not his speeches. If you know even the tiniest stitch of what he's been doing the past 4 years then you can see right through his bullshít. He appeals to the willfully ignorant.
