Starting with "I" implies that you have either something to say or an opinion, when did saying something or having an opinion become narcissistic?

You're onto something. The issue is context.

People that use I, me, my solely (or nearly solely) in front of positive statements and use you, they, she, he, etc.. solely (or nearly solely) in front of negative statements are indeed often insecure with narcissistic tendencies.

I was dumb enough to marry (now divorced) a narcissist (which, incidentally, like 75% or western women have narcissistic tendencies in relations with men). Wow. Absolute refusal to accept accountability or admit their mistakes. Stay single fellas, there is no 50/50......you either give way more than you get or you have to listen to constant temper tantrums and self-pity parties with society, in general, completely backing them up.

Dang, that was too long. I'm bitter like a lemon.

I may not be narcissistic, I may just be myopic and self centered

Well that would depend on what you follow the "I" with, wouldn't it?

"The use of 'I' at the beginning means someone is trying to temper his opinion."

That is a stronger statement than:

"I think the use of 'I' at the beginning means someone is trying to temper his opinion."

I dont think so. I think its necessary sometimes to make sense of what you are trying to say. I hope you understand what I am saying.

No, it probably means that you're going to be stating something from your point of view.

The repeated use of "I" can suggest a narcissistic tendency at a minimum. Ever have a conversation with someone who's only path was back to them and what they thought, did, etc? Why do social networking sites use the "I"? I believe it is to attract the most common personality - narcissism. They know the coolest, hipest, smartest and most gifted person anyone knows is "I".

"I" don't think so, but "I" think you'll notice it by what the person sais or writes after the "I"!

Could be but I saw mention of a study that claimed that women use the word "I' when they write like a billion times more then men do. I don't know if its true, but I do think its interesting!

No, how else are you supposed to talk about something you feel, or think, or did, or want to do? "Someone is hungry, guess who?" or "someone needs to get off the phone and since it's not you it must be me"? ;-P

Not always. But asking whether sentences starting with "i" might be narcissistic is almost always in itself anal compulsive.

Words are not narcissistic. People, and they way they use words, are.
