Is The Customer Always Right...?

"IS THE COSTUMER ALWAYS RIGHT?" These famous American words heard daily from almost every employer. Did you ever have a work experience that went bad enough that your job was in jeopardy?...Please explain...(For ex: while shopping in the mid-west recently, at a well known store had run out of large consumer's bags so the store manager brought out some black garbage bags w/ yellow draw strings to use for larger purchased items. The consumer at the check-out was so angry that her stuff was being bagged in a "garbage bag" that she threw one of the items at the cashier's face, then called her ignorant & insulted her race too...it wasn't even the cashier's fault but b'cuz she was insulted, the cashier threw the same item back at the consumer's face...I laughed at first, then I realized that this was a serious matter...I still wonder what happened to that cashier?)

We use to have a sign in the back room of where I worked that read, "The customer is always right............Until they get to the otherside of the door."

The idea comes because the customer is not alway mad at the customer service person, but at the situation. But sense you represent the store they hassle you. So your boss wants you to simply not take offense in a outward way till later when you are away from the customers and scream and shout about the crazy so and so. A good manager will always take the heat off a cashier or employee being abused by a irrate customer, it is part of their job to step in. Unfortunatly to many managers these days are total wimps and can not handle even the basic customer complaints.

No. They just have to think they're right. Apart from in the example you provided, the customer was bang out of order but so was the cashier for retaliating.

**** NO the stupid customer isn't always right. Even if I AM the costumer. I don't care, I have been the employer one too many times when bullshit has went down, and unfortunatly I am not afraid to fight back.. but they are not. That is like trying to instill a belief that these "customers" are higher people than employees.

No, not always. If the manager was reasonable they'd side with the cashier in that situation. Once I was a cashier at a grocery store, and while I was trying to fix a cash register problem having people help me, someone stole $50+ worth of groceries while I was busy, because I didn't notice I was fired. Which I think is dumb, you can't control people and make them not steal.

If i read this correctly, the customer might have assumed that the Manager was saying that he/she was trash since he didn't explain the reason for the giving him/her the trash bag.

I suspect, some form of racisim might be involved here & it just goes to show we shouldn't always assume that everyone thinks alike. And i think both of them are wrong, though for different reasons.

I agree totally with MisssBlazzz. Too many people walk around thinking that those in customer service positions are less than human and they live to serve customers. The reality is that most customer service people simply don't give a damn because they get abused all day long. This isn't healthy, and one of the main reasons I finished college! I would NEVER treat a customer service person the way I was treated!

I used to be in business for myself and I've learned that all I want is "good" customers. I try to provide a good service at a good price. Life is too short to deal with customers who complain, want more for less, or are late in paying their bills.

I used to refer these customers to my competition.

No. And I've told a few they're not right. I recently terminated a 3 year contract with a client becuase they wouldn't take advice (which is what we were hired to do!).

This is like saying the woman in a relationship is always right! They're not, but we let them win if we want to keep them happy!
