It's called the Electoral Collage. Each state has a certain amount of electoral votes. The winner is determined by the majority of these votes not by the overall popular vote. American Govt. 101

We need instant run-off voting to make it even remotely possible for a Ralph Nader, a Ron Paul or a Dennis Kucinich to be elected President.

It's a system that has done the US well for a long time. Just because it didn't go the way you like it doesn't mean it's not a good system or not democratic.
