Depression is a state of mind. Yes there is a cure for it. For the mental aspect of it, it helps to be around positive people, or develop positive ideas. It helps to indulge in hobbies and activities, keep your mind busy... Essentially, make it so you have absolutely no time to feel depressed or think about depression. That's the way I've handled it without meds. And getting laid on a fairly regular basis also helps.

You make it sound so easy. Take up hobbies while suffering depression? I don't think so.

He asked a cure for depression, not wallowing in depression. Depression is easy to maintain. All a person has to do is not do anything, with a whole lot of free time at their disposal. The first step to getting over depression is to understand what it really is. External / internal factors may cause it, but what creates depression is simply chemicals produced by the brain, and fed to "depression receptors". And believe it or not, certain feelings have addictive components. Like people who are thrill seekers are addicted to endorphins. Subconsciously, some people may be addicted to depression, and the mind will create the fatigue and the necessary feelings associated with it to facilitate it. Everything is completely mind over matter. Happiness, Depression, Confidence... Everything. You want to get rid of depression? Your mindset has to change, and if you fill up your day with enough positive energy, the depression receptors are filled with something else. What do you think Prozac, Xanax, Paxil, etc do? They feed the brain's receptors with something that mimics contentment. With side effects.

Mild blues can be remedied with at least 2 hours of hard exercise per week. Omega 3 fish oil has been helpful if it is taken in significant amounts daily.

Bear in mind the motto of the Royal Air Force `Per Ardua Ad Astra` and if you can keep reaching out, you will eventually succeed.

supposively a healthy diet and exercise can help. while i think this can cure depression somewhat i personally don't think it cures it completely. i think the only way to get rid of depression is by getting rid of the cause.

It helps to remember that it will pass. Two other things we have found helpful - St John's Wort and Vitamin B Complex.

I had to deal with it after a stillbirth of a son and think I am facing another leg of it again (5 years later, 6m anniversary of my mom passing)...I went on celexa the first time; don't know how to deal with it now...My tongue in cheek answer that has some validity: the cure for depression is to STOP THINKING. It is what we think of how we are living, etc that depresses us. DENY it all and go on a cruise!!!

Seriously, if you are truly facing depression, know that it WILL pass but it may reveal something that you do not want to face. You CAN face it and "get past it"...give yourself time, get therapy, take good care of your body and tell yourself you will "be ok"...hugs.

My wife suffered with depression resulting from a head injury. She got relief by taking a nutritional supplement called Reliv.

I'm certain that it is different with each person, but I was deeply depressed (to the point of wanting death) for over two years, from 2009 through 2011. In my case, it was a combination of external and internal causes. I finally started to come out of it last year. While not entirely over it, it was the passing of time that helped me. I'm not sure that this is the answer you want to hear. It is only an account of what happened in my case. I am very sorry that you are going through this.

Sorry to say, but it really wasn't anything I did right. I think that that with the two years of being slothful, immobile and horribly unmotivated -- my mind just got used to it and learned to cope. Like I said, I'm not completely over it yet, but at least I am starting to make plans again and going out on Saturday nights for the first time in a long time. I have some good days now.
