Is there a way to make myself stop picking at my fingernails?

When my hands aren't doing anything, i tend to start picking at my nails. I don't know why, but it really annoys me. I don't want to put fake ones on top though.

chewing gum doesn't help you're not trying to keep your mouth busy. you should get a stress ball. or play d'oh. something to keep your hands busy.

You've got a simple nervous habit going on there and one way to change that habit is by focusing your attention on it. Don't allow yourself to pick at your nails absentmindedly. Focus your attention on what you're doing. Or you can start chewing gum, and I mean really CHEWING gum. Keep in mind it takes about 3 weeks to change a habit.

Put a rubber band on your wrist and when you start picking at your nails, start snapping the rubber band instead. Don't do it hard enough to hurt yourself, just pluck at it gently. You will have to consciously do this at first but it should become a habit within a week. This has worked for several people I know. If you don't like the idea of a rubber band, find a cute inexpensive bracelet that is made of elastic with bead on it, just make sure it won't hurt when it releases back on your skin and is sturdy enough not to break.

I belive you can buy something in the chemist and when applied will taste very bitter if you decide to continue biting your nails. You could always have false nasils applied but I do not think this is a good idea. Hope this helps.
