I use a piece of toilet paper to get the fly out, and just leave him/her alone. If it flies away, fine. If not, I throw it outside.

Strange, I didn't know that flies actually drown in glass. I am presuming the glass is empty because it's been a year without rain.

Yes, you can..take the "drowned" fly out of the glass and pour salt on it...little science experiment..the salt pulls the water out restoring oxygen intake to the fly. Try it..pretty.
