You need to find a good counselor. They are there to talk and never prescribe medications. They will give you the tools you need to control and stop your negative thoughts before they start! You need to figure out what has thrown you into this downward spiral, or as I always called it, the black hole of my life. It is never a quick and easy fix, but if you keep hope, you will make it through. I also suggest going to see a Christian pastor. They will talk to you and lead you in the right direction. Stay away from the push ones though! They are there to help. They have devoted their lives to the children of God, whether you believe in God or not. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. Turning to God saved my life. You may not believe, but try talking to God and asking him into your life. He is the only way. Counselors can only counsel the mind, not the soul.

I still have good days and bad days, but I am glad I'm not drugged up on the pills my quack doctors had me on a few years ago. It's taken this long to detox that crap out of my system. Thinking on my own is refreshing!

Life is hopeful for all people. Get to know yourself, analize the problems and solve them bit by bit. Then you will overcome.
Yes, lots of people are desperate only because they refuse to learn. Contact any healthy elders and tell clearly your conditions, I think they will show you what to learn and to do to solve your problems.

It depends on the reason for your feeling this way. If it's cognitive that's one thing but if were dealing with a chemical imbalance, that’s a physical problem like high blood pressure, than you need a medicine to correct it.

You can find helpful information online. For example, I found this article at eHow:

How to Overcome Depression On Your Own
By jeffguenther, eHow Member

Here are some tips on how to overcome depression symptoms on your own:

Step 1 Depression can feel overwhelming and debilitating at times but if you are motivated to make a change then you can start to feel better faster than you may think. The most important thing to do in order to move into a more positive mood is to simply have the intention to feel better. If you can intend to feel some relief then your brain will start triggering better feeling thoughts and your emotions will follow suit. The next time you feel sad try these simple techniques to start feeling better.

Step 2 When you are feeling at your worst some typical feelings that would be surfacing are feelings or despair, powerlessness, grief, fear, insecurity and guilt. This is the bottom rung of the emotional scale. It really doesn’t get any worse than this. First, as I said before, make a true intention to start feeling better. After you sit with that intention for a minute begin reaching for the feelings of anger, rage, blame, revenge or jealousy. You may think that those feelings are just as bad but in actuality those feelings really feel better. Once you can identify with angry feelings your feelings of depression are immediately lifted and you start to feel some relief. Play around with how it feels to be angry. Pay attention to your thoughts and what type of internal dialogue is going through your head. If you feel like it, stay angry for the rest of the day or carry it on throughout the week. When you are ready to move even higher up the emotional scale make the intention to move higher and start making statements that reflect the feelings of worry, doubt and disappointment. Eventually you will start moving through irritation, frustration and pessimism. From there it is an easy step into feelings of boredom, contentment, hopefulness, positive beliefs, happiness, love and joy.

Step 3 This next one I learned in grad school. What you need to know here is that when you are feeling joy and happiness you typically display the same type of facial expressions. A smile is on your face, and your eyes light up when positivity is running through your body. What you can do is force a smile. If you start smiling then your brain thinks there is something to be happy about and it starts shooting off neurons that tell your mind to get in a better mood. If you are having trouble forcing a smile you should try biting down on a pencil. You’ll get the same effect.

Step 4 Another way to start feeling happy now is to sit down and take out a pen and paper and try to figure out if you honestly believe that things will get better. If you can write out some logical and rational statements about the possibility of feeling better sometime in the future then your spirits will instantly start to lift. If you feel as though you are at a dead end job and your boss is a horrible person try writing down some statements that will create hope of being able to find a new job with an employer you enjoy being around. If you are in a tight financial situation and feel as though there is no end in sight try figuring out if you will ever get to a place with less debt or a bigger savings. Once you can honestly convince yourself that things will be okay pretty soon then you will start creating positive belief systems that will get you through your sadness.

YES, there are more people out here who have been to emotional hell and back than you realise. That awful pit of despair where you feel like you could die and nobody would know or care...when you feel too exhausted and down on yourself to see a point in trying to change things...fed up with people who don't understand telling you to pull yourself together and to remember that there are plenty of people worse off than you...sound familiar? You might think 'how can people miles away who don't know me really help?' or 'counselling is a waste of time'. You probably don't believe it now, but there will come a day when something or someone touches your soul unexpectedly and the numbness inside will ease just enough to allow you to see how to carry on and learn how to feel alive again. You will feel the sun on your skin and wonder how it was possible to have ever felt so alone and hopeless.

I have been through various courses of pills and counselling has helped, even though I went in with a negative attitude and cried buckets! I was exhausted, apathetic, hated my body and own company, pushed friends away by being too clingy, tearful and angry, worried about money and my dead relationship etc and was scared of change. I still have my bad days and hate being on pills, but now I can enjoy little things like reading in the garden, singing to my favourite songs, opening up to my friends, going for a swim etc and I can finally see the many good things about myself and my life again and not just the negative.

I suggest you speak to your doctor about pills to help you get your chemical balance sorted so that you can think logically again and maybe consider counselling or joining a support group. Don't be afraid to open up and ask friends for support. Maybe join a sport team / choir / college evening class so that you meet new people and have something to focus on which reminds you what you are good at. I find writing stuff in a diary helps me to clear my mind before the exaggerated thought spiral gets out of control. Keep telling yourself that things can only get better. They will.

Maybe tell us on here what may have triggered this episode - relationship problems? Family? Work? Money? If you can figure out what's behind the desperation and start to be able to put it into words, you will find it easier to constructively pull yourself out of the black hole step by step. If you tell us, we may be able to give you specific help to help you tackle the cause of the hopelessness and not just the debilitating symptoms.

Good luck. Don't give up and remember I'm just a click away if you need to chat.
