A little suspect. Most bosses would be understanding.

Will work always be there? Yes.
Will your kids always turn 10, 11 etc? Nope.

Unfortunately it happens, but if it is just the usual crush at work, no they can miss me for a night. If its the last gasp on a bid, ya, I might, hate to miss the work, keeps food on the table.
If it is just normal stuff, no, work can wait.

Only if you value your job above your family.

That is a rough call. A lot depends on what the job function is. Is it a firefighter, a police officer, a doctor, a nurse ?

There are some job positions that one can not just get up and leave till another day.

Then there are those jobs where the employer will force overtime to fit production needs. I have always tried to be there. But there were a few times that I could not. But I would always try to do something "special" to make up for missing it.

Its not mandatory and not a job listed above. Its just a choice in my opinion. There are absolutely no reprecussions for NOT working late.

Then I would say that the person should be able to attend the childs birthday party. Due to the type of work that I did. I could not always do that. So we scheduled parties around my work schedule. In truth my two children would have two days to enjoy their birthday most of the time.

No but the sad fact in today's world it is a fact of life we have to be able to feed that child and make sure they have at least a gift.

I'm fine with it. Such is life. But my family never made a huge deal of birthdays, so I didn't have a problem understanding the fact that work was a responsibility that my parents took seriously.

Not if there are reasonable alternatives, such as going in early the next day or working Saturday, etc. How often do things of this nature happen?
