Isn't it great that English is the most widely used language in the world, it makes you feel so proud, doesn't it?

No, it makes me feel isolated from the minority. There are lots of languages I wish I had been taught from an early age, but sadly wasn't.

The British deserve more of the credit for this than the Americans do. It is British authors who established the clarity and directness of English in the 19th and 20th centuries. Many foreigners have told me that English is wonderfully direct, egalitarian, and relatively informal. For instance, in most European languages, there is a polite and deferential second person pronoun, and an informal intimate one. In English (as in Latin) there is one form for all: "you".

What's to be proud of? It's not like you invented it?
