Resolved Question

It's time for me to get a new laptop. What do you recommend ?

Essentially use it for emails, google, some games, EP, and a bit of online shopping on auction sites.

any of the Mac fleet. Macs cost a little more, but they last longer, they are more resistant to viruses and there are easy-to-install updates that are constantly sent to you to keep the machine running the best it can.

Apple is the best choice as they can run both Apple OS and Windows now. You can use Windows when it's necessary (games) and avoid all the crap associated with Microsoft products most of the time. The little extra cost is an investment that can't be outweighed by purchasing anything Windows-based as Apples are more stable, more user-friendly, and much safer.

I really like Powerbooks. They seem to last me about 5 years.

I agree with qazrazl. Dell has THE BEST service and technical support organization, BAR NONE, and if their laptops are utterly the best, the difference between their build quality and HP's isn't enough to justify dealing with HP service, which is okay, but by no means of Dell's caliber.

Point of Fact: my daughter has a 3-year-old Dell Inspiron which had either a 3- or 4-year warranty on it (put there by moi!). A couple weeks ago, she was having severe problems with it and worked with Dell Tech Support, who finally diagnosed a bad hard drive, sent her a replacement, and helped her back up her system and restore it onto the new drive over the phone! I should also mention that a company I used to work for OEM'ed Dell's machines for one of the systems we sold, mostly on the basis of SUPPORT.

I don't like laptops. They seem to break every year or two and have to be replaced. Desktops last way longer. Just buy an extra TV for the computer room and its as good as laptopping on the couch.

Unless you actually use it on the go... like.... basically no one does. haha.

I just don't like laptops.

Plus they scorch your crotch and make for ****** coasters.

It depends on how much money you have to put into it. If you dont need high graphics which it sounds like you dont go really cheap like Everex for example. Otherwise HP is good. Buy one used that needs a new home. There are several good options.

It depends what you are going to use it for, are there Windows apps that you need, or are you just surfing and emailing?

I run Windows and Linux, but mostly use my MacBook Pro (especially for EP). I also have a Linux based netbook, which is great for surfing and you can pick one up for under $300. Linux and Macs are more virus resistant, and you have less problems (overall).

To sum up, a netbook (like the eeePC) is a cheap reliable internet device. If you want a performant, reliable, sexy machine that is easy to use, get a Mac, if you are not sure what you are going to use it for, or want the versatility to run anything, get a windows box, like a Dell or HP.
