Definitely NOT a villain!
I'll stop before giving him "hero" status, because for all I know? Maybe he really IS guilty of one or more of the rape charges they're accusing him of? Heroes don't rape people, in my book.
But frankly, this reeks of an all too common formula where govt. is angered by someone speaking or publishing content they don't like, so they try to discredit the source, eventually trying to turn the public against them and whatever work they've done, using such tactics as charging them with false crimes.
Bottom line? Whether or not Assange is a "good person" in his interactions with other people, he's done a good service by running the wikileaks web site and taking a stand for freedom of the press.
