It makes them feel older- it makes them feel powerful, and in charge of their own bodily function (ironic, isn't it? lack of control equates to compete control) and experience the glamorized 'true solid difficulty of the tough world'. Plenty of rich kids here, in Singapore, where drugs are at a death penalty, use it as a coping mechanism to support their survival guilt, their lack of association with world issues they have never needed to face, and an easy escape out of life stressors.
