Little money, more time, small kids...what are some summer adventures?

I have the summer with my kids (all under 12) and not much money. Any suggestions for adventures for us? Hubby is working out of state so it's just me & the kids and they need meaningful time with me.

Is This A Good Question? (2)

    camping
our local zoo has a freebie day once a month (or at least used to)
small local museums are often free
create your own band with inexpensive home made musical :"instruments" -- oatmeal box drums,
    maracas, etc.
Check out what you can find under meetup.com in your area
put on your own production of their favorite stories

You are only limited by your imagination. Kids just enjoy having something fun to do. Playing at the local park, blowing bubbles in the yard, nature walks to learn about different kinds of flowers, trees, etc. Sometimes something as simple as an inexpensive inflatable wading pool can keep them happily occupied for hours. Depending on how old they are - making simple crafts out of everyday things (like making and decorating newpaper hats or sock puppets or even letting them help mix up and 'bake' cookies and then decorating their own can be a big hit. For inexpensive outings check your local area for free kid friendly places like museums or zoos and don't forget to check other places like the fire department or vet's office to see if they allow tours for kids (kids always love firetruck and animals). Good luck and have fun!

maybe you can go camping, or you can stay home and make up games through out the day. Maybe visit some relatives, or teach them how to bake, and take them on a bike ride. so many things to do. :)

Chess and video games. Maybe checkers if chess is too difficult for them at their age.

have a picnic in the park.. take some food and ball, fill some water balloons, sand toys
go to the beach.. spend the day making sand castles
rent a few movies and have a fun day in!!
put a tent up outside and have a camp out. .make smores!
check out your local Parks and Rec.. they may offer fun classes they can enroll in and it usually isn't too much money.. also check out local bookstores.. they may have activities throughout the summer and the library too!!
if you have friends with kids then have a play day at each others houses.. set up slip and slides and blow up pools and cook some hotdogs and let the kids have fun while the adults have a bit of adult time!!

Look into the Zoo or theme parks if you have any in your area.. during summer offer discounts on admission.

Anything involving dirt and/or water. I raised my kids at the lake, I swear. It took little gas to get there. We'd pack the trunk full of all-day-long supplies: two meals, snacks, drinks, beach toys, blankets, sunscreen, dry clothes, radio. We could use their grills and we would fish... collect mussel shells, walk the beach, swim, float on floaties, build a fire. Kinda like day camping. My kids still talk about that.

Hot dogs are good and cheap too. LOL. You know those little plastic habitat containers? We'd take one of those, take the small door lid off the top, put a couple of bits of bread in there, and all these little brim fish would swim right into the container. Then they could watch them on dry land for a few minutes before releasing them. We'd stir up ant beds. Hunt different kinds of mushrooms on the shore. Catch butterflies. Catch our bait... crickets and grasshoppers and dig for worms. Have fun!
