1. The length of your relationship with him.
2. The nature of his sentence.
3. You like him enough to be his girlfriend.

Please rank the above - honestly - in order of importance. He's in jail not because of you, but because of someone's silly laws. The time you've known him has nothing to do with how strongly you feel for him. He owes you nothing, and you owe him nothing. You aren't in the relationship to "owe" anyone anything. You are in the relationship to feel good, about yourself and about him. So don't complicate the decision with these things. Keep it simple, because it is very simple:

Do you want to deny yourself a physical relationship with someone for the next half a year?

If yes, then wait it out. 6 months will go alot longer for him than it will for you, and it's not like there's a whole lot of dating ops for him in jail.

If no, then go where your urges take you. Fu(k him. He got himself caught, now it's his problem. You don't have to tell him that you're with anyone else, and then when he gets out you can make your decision then. Lying can be very useful in situations like this, and it will get you to stop feeling guilty about have a healthy sex drive.

Here's a new rule for life:

IF the jail sentence is longer than the time you have been together, then you don't have to wait (and you shouldn't wait!) for the person to be released.

If you want to be with someone else while he is away, then you obviously don't love him enough for him to be the one. If you really do love him, waiting for him will be the only option that you will to do.

No. He has shown he is not the one by going to jail.
