It's simple math. In 2009 we grew 678 million tons and the population is about 6.8 billion. That's around 2 pounds of rice per person per year. There are 29,000 grains in a pound, which is around 160 per day per person.
The price of rice would go up and more farmers would want to cash in on that, by planting more rice.
