There are ways. There is the hardship discharge when he has personal issues that prevent him from performing his duties--which is why I was given an honorable discharge. It's called a governmental consideration or something to that effect. I don't have my DD214 in front of me but it's something that he should go to legal about. Actually he should speak to someone in legal anyway to see what his valid options are. I've known people who have gotten dishonorable discharges and still got jobs in the civilian sector. It depends on the circumstances of the discharge not just the discharge itself. Tell him to go talk to legal please.

Maybe, maybe not. As the other post said, you can screw up and get tossed out, but even at "less than honorable" he will have a problem when his background is checked. Many employers do background checks nowadays. Even guys with mental disabilities are being kept in.

can he get out?!?!? , sure does he want to in the long run probably not. IF he decided to do something stupid against the armys rules to get out , he is screwed. He will never be able to get a government job , hell he wont be able to work at fast food places that have chains on bases. He will have it on his background check forever. He will never be able to buy a gun , and so much more.
If he gets hurt he can be discharged...but it has to be something he cant recover from...like a badly broken back, something that will leave him crippled and useless to the army.
I am in A military wife and I would tell him to suck it up and deal the first 2 years are ALWAYS the hardest.

Either through dishonorable or general discharge. Dishonorable discharge is grave and does affect his employability in certain industries and government work. Its a nasty and avoidable condition. I have seen some 'quit' the army and opt of dishonorable discharge. General discharge are for people who use one of the tactics of claiming medical problems that doctors can't verify (like back pain, shoulder stiffness, etc) or claim they are gay, no longer will fight, fail a drug test (serious drug offenses are criminal and you are dishonorably discharged and serve prison time). He has to stay in stay out of trouble ( punishment can be reduction in grade and fines, not worth losing money for). As leadership changes your friend's brother should have a better time of it. He will waste more time and get little out of playing the general discharge game. That process may take as long as his enlistment. I have seen it during my time in the Army.
