well if he's being mean spirited & that is his nature you are going to be in an emotionally, mentally abusive relationship that may lead to domestic violence. some people are not batterers but they break you down with words. its still a form of control which if you let it continue may get worse. i mean, you love him which is why you are asking this because you aren't ready to leave. at the same time, you have enough love for yourself to care about the fact he is always making you cry. what is best for you is what is best for the relationship. you can seek counseling to address what the core issues are but if he isn't willing to make changes for himself & the sake of your relationship you know that he doesn't care. i'm all for working things out but if you have done all you can do, i say let it go while you still are ahead. i mean, i don't know if you are married with kids & property or not but if you aren't then you have nothing to lose but your dignity & self respect if you stay. weigh all the options, have a heart to heart with your man to see what you can do. if it doesn't work you did your best & move on.

He does that because he knows his words and gestures have power over you. Fight back, ignore him, or leave him, just show him that you won't tolerate his behavior anymore.

Most do this because it makes them feel good about themselves to put others down. When they see it hursts you,it gives them power. It's not right and it's cruel...maybe you could talk to him about it.If it doesn't stop then,it never will and could get worse so maybe it's time to move on.

Some people are like that, they see only their own emotional needs and naught for anyone else's. Just remember that it reflects nothing of who you are. If he so strongly feels the need to berate others, then I am with Rachel on this.

Many people say cruel things to their partners because they don`t really love them, they want to control them.
And you are living in an abusive situation and need to get out of it as noone deserves to live with any abuse.
So tell him to back off or you will be off.
and mean it , give him a chance to change ,which he probably won`t and if he won`t then pack your bags and leave, why should you be his abused partner, he dosn`t deserve anyone if he can`t be nice to them.

My first husband was the same. He had to call me names all the time, put me down, etc. I left him. People like that have low self esteem and get a kick out of putting people that are closest to them down. Reason being, makes him feel better. Good luck to you. Sounds like you need a good big can of gasoline, lol, J/K...
