You should take, or keep your Father's name. If you have never been allowed by mum to recognize your father and your heritage with his name, you can get a judge to have your official records changed. In most parts of the US it is legal to just change your name by telling everyone you changed it and by living by the new name. However, some recipients would prefer a judges acceptance.

If you're over 18, why on earth would you change your surname just because your mother does?
I don't understand. Most likely you will need to have it legally changed which involves attorneys or at least the court system. From there, if you live in the USA it is a simple matter of going to the SS office and DMV and then everything else is easily changed. Most places will want a copy of everything, though.Like (1)

Surname is a family name.. if your mum divorces, only she needs to change. Are you going with your mum ? in which case you need to change yours every time she marries someone. So wait for her to decide. If you staying with your maiden family, then you just need to hold on.. Pls understand that you have a right to hold on to ya maiden family name, over your dad even.

Why do you need to change your name. That sounds like a serious pain in the ***, and the reason it sounds that way is because it is.
