She grew up in a different time. The economy was fantastic before the 80s. There were jobs for all with good yearly increases, strong unions, and all that kinda stuff. It's a very different story now. 5% per year is good (not amazing, but good), especially if you can rely on that. Many people never see raises and more importantly, income has been going down while cost of living has been going up. There are LOTS of statistics which prove that. <br />

Some quick internet "research" shows me the national average is 4.1% - so you're above average! YAAAY!<br />

Anyways, your mother probably just wants whatever she feels is best for you and probably believes her negativity will motivate you. or she likes complaining. Or she has a point, maybe you work in an industry where employers are especially predatory. Just keep in mind that the economy is bad because the employers of the world have been screwing the employees.

Yes, rejoice in silence and be grateful for what you have. In any profession you're luck to receive automatic scheduled cost-of-living raises to at least match the rate of inflation.
