Resolved Question

Need some advice....How do you kindly say this.....?

I am a creative person. While I can generally be a bit of a perfectionist, painting is the one outlet that I find, I like to just get dirty and do it, and I don't really care about the final product.
So here's my dilema.... I have a project I want to pursue, it's an old 2 seater chair left from an old abandoned airport. I want to paint it some funky way..not sure yet....anyway- everyday...my boyfriend comes home with yet ANOTHER thing that I need to do to "prep" the chair and then 5 more ways to handle the paint job. I'm to the point I don't even want to do it anymore. It's still sitting outside...because I no longer see it as a fun project..he's made it WORK! I know he means well....

Is there a nice way of saying...dude- your stealing the joy from my creative outlet??

Yeah, darlin'... I thought of some of those things that you'd normally have to do for a proper paint job. And there were some you mentioned I hadn't thought of. That's great!

But, y'know, I've been thinking about it.
And, you know what? Just one time I thought I'd be really stoopid and do nothing right. Just to see how it turns out. And maybe it would be fun, even though the result would be crap.

Then we can go find another and do the job properly, you and me. Whaddya say?

Just tell him what you just wrote. It wasn't mean.

I think as long as you word it in a way that let's him know that:

1) you truly appreciate him taking in interest in your activities

2) you know he means well

3) ...but his approach to helping you makes your fun feel like a job. Ask him if maybe instead he could write down a list of suggestions that you can refer to if/when you get stuck and need his words of wisdom. Remember, men like to feel needed and helpful.

4) Thank him for being there for you and smooch him ;-)

Have fun babe!

Well, just be honest. Tell him you appreciate him trying to help you and you know he means well, but for you it's just a fun project, it's not this huge deal. You could tell him that when he tries to take it over and tell you how to create, it's not very fun for you anymore, which is the whole point of being creative for you. Let him know, though, that you appreciate his input (if you usually do in other circumstances) and if you need his advice, you'll ask for it.

Just don't say anything and do it the way YOU want. Actions speak louder than words.

How about, "I just like to get dirty and do it, and I don't really care about the final product".
Is it really such a big deal? All you're doing is saying you want to do it your way, pretty much a basic human right. The guy would have to be ultra-sensitive to take offense.

how about copying the words you just wrote onto an email and sending it to him ... or pinning paper on the fridge ... laugh together about it ... humour usually diffuses any difficult situation ...

Why don't you move the chair out of his eyesight?! Then, maybe he'll forget about it and you can get on with your project. He sounds so sweet, and well-meaning and male!! Or, just get going with your project but thank him for his offers of help?
