Not sure if my husband is an alcoholic...drinks vodka on weekends in front of 6 &7 yr old..should we leave?

He had an alcoholic father, but only lived with him til he was a year old. My babies are always hearing...STAY AWAY FROM DRUGS AND ALCOHOL IT WILL KILL!! And they look at me and say 'what about daddy'? We filed bankrupcty in 06 due to his old unpaid debt and hospital bills. Now that I want to leave I have an SUV that I cant afford and want to give back, get a smaller used car so we can survive if we leave. Upside down on the loan. Swamped in debt. Husband drinks on weekends,in front of the babies, slurred speech, yelling, sometimes getting violet with us(never hit me).If he has vodka in the house during the week he'll drink it every night till its gone. This weekend he could even get off the couch to go to the bathroom..went on the carpet..then puked on the carpet. He's responsible when sober, not the most friendly person in the world. Im so lost...no $$ nowhere to go. If I could file again I would. And get another car.AND GET OUT.....please help...I've got to help my babies grow up right!!!

Talk to him and if he does not listen then warn him your not going to have the kids around that. Then if it doesn`t stop leave him and give him time to realize what he done and if he doesn`t at least the kids wont grow up and be affected by watching him drink every weekend.

Yes he is an alcoholic. You should probably try first to get him help, but if he doesn't want to clean up for you and the kids its time to leave.

Is life unmanagable? Does he turn into someone else when drunk? Does his behavior affect the child? Does it affect you? Would he rather drink than do something else? Does he get mad when he can't drink? Does he make excuses to drink? There are many questiona to answer before you can be sure he is an alcoholic. If he is willing have him go for an assesment at a treatment facility or counselors office.

Do you have a job? If not you could try and find one or start going to school online. I have been doing that for years. Start bettering yourself so that you will never be stuck anywhere.

Is there an Al-Anon group in your area? Try looking them up online. They may be able to refer you to the services you need. Good luck!

Yes, he is an alcoholic, but he has to acknowledge the pain his behaviour causes you and your children. If he will not seek help, say you must leave...or ask him to leave. Don't divorce him just yet, he may get well and return to himself and you. Blessings.

yes, until he realizes he has a problem you are adding to it

Think about you and your children. What are you teaching them?
