Looked it up in my official etiquette book: always the crotch.
Because else you'd also turn your back on someone. That is so rude that it has even become a saying.
If you do it exactly according to the rules: face half way away and mumble 'pardon me' occasionally when there are a lot of people you need to give the crotch to (like in theaters).
