The inherent danger to a suspicious mind is that whatever we seek in this world, we end up finding, whether true or not. Tricky to avoid, sometimes, but a suspicious mind is best examined, deconstructed, remanufactured.
Depends on what you mean by a "gift". Are we talking a sleeve of your favorite candy-bars from the dollar store or something expensive?
Wine or a nick-nack isn't suspect. Roses sound a little fishy. Candy is fine as long as it's "casual candy" like those little Ghiarardelli chocolate squares or a toblerone and not the boxed candy.
