Yes, it does seem like a waste of time when you say it like that. But consider this, when you sleep, the body heals itself, repairs different parts that need fixing, you can have wonderful dreams, or awful nightmares. Your bed is your haven, you feel warm and safe there, you can choose to be on your own in bed, or indeed share it with another. To spend something like 25 years in bed / sleeping, and doing the things we do, need to do is not so bad, and not such a waste of time as it may appear.

No, it doesn't. Because sleep is essential. Not many things in life are essential. You need food, water, love and maybe clothes. There is enough time to get those things without the need to eliminate important nap time.
sleep time is not wasted time..sleep time is rejuvenation time for the body and mind

........... then you would just have 25 years less.
so, best to have good quality sleep,
............ when your body carries out all the necessary repair work.

Even if our body is in great physical shape and doesn't have to rest all that often, our mind needs to. Running on no sleep or even small amounts can lead to insanity.
you could always take up lucid dreaming so it doesn't feel like a waste.
Why? If you take control of your dream it can never be scary.
