Resolved Question

Once you have Complex PTSD, does it ever go away?

I used to have to drown out my symptoms with excessive caffeine, alcohol until I was borderline to alcohol poisoning every time I drank, and then antidepressants which only made me feel suicidal. It was hard just to make it through the day. Many nights I would "camp" out on my front porch, because I was afraid of being alone, because of how bad my depression had become.

I changed work assignments almost a year ago, and this one keeps me busy all the time. So busy in fact, that I don't feel any of that stuff anymore. I never get the chance to drift off and get swallowed by the thoughts in my head like I used to.

However, I still experience symptoms like flashbacks brought on by a scent or a time of year, fits of anger, irrational rage, crying or arguing, and feeling hypersensitive to pain and stressful situations. From time to time though.

I'm wondering if these are just lingering symptoms-
or if Complex PTSD just never goes away.
Can anyone here help me? Thanks a million!!!! :)

It can go away if you're conditioned to respond to those triggers differently. You should look into desensitization therapy of some sort and see if that helps. It might not completely erradicate it, but it should at least give you ways of coping long term.
Congrats on minimizing its effects on your life, though. I hope things continue to get better! Best of luck!

I've had cPTSD for years. There is no single right answer but for most it will not go away. The goal should be to get in control of the symptoms instead of them controling you. As mentioned, all the symptoms mean there are "issues" that are still either buried or you have not processed. As long as they remained buried or unprocessed....the symptoms will keep coming out...in various ways. The other key for most is to uncover the "lies" one believes about themsleves because of the trauma....and get to a point of believing, and then burning in the truth. I don't think that CBT, or talk therapy alone helps very many people, if so, great. It sometime does if another party can point out the "illogic" of your beliefs and feelings.....and point out the "truth" that you do not believe at the moment. For Most, it is just too big and complex without using more powerful tools......and much of the "help" available is not good help...do be careful.

For me, EMDR was the single most effective thing. It pretty much got rid of my big triggers, brought up forgotten/buried events and emotions so they could be processed, etc.

I still have a lot of residue/symptoms like anxiety, depression and it had the effect of isolating me. It is like an onion that needs peeled a layer at a time....and there are many layers for me and I suspect for you too.

Your story indicates to me that you have not received much help on this. For now, you need to know, that every single sign and symptom you have is "normal, common, OK"....Accept the fact you have it by no fault of your own. And know that it can and will get much better IF you "process" all the issues/emotions....conscious or buried.

You just have to decide to get help, decide that it is ok to talk about everything and find the right person that you can do that with.

let me know if I can be of any more help.

PS....that is the core of ptsd. We "bury" or develop a hidden filing system to store....all the trauma along the way. If we don't, we could not continue to do our job(in my case), or have to bury them to survive ongoing trauma.....a self-preservation mechanism, that bites us in the end. Pretty simple. Just have to remove all the burrs from under the saddle and be willing to hold on for the ride. It will get better.

Wish I could say all my work on this made me perfectly healthy. It hasn't. In fact I have lost ground recently....but am far better than I used to be. I have worked with a few that became close....to perfectly healthy....so YES it can and will get better.
