You tell them "I'm doing the same that I was before... the best that I can" and then smile gently and walk/look away.

they are really just asking how you are holding up. i usually say well i have alot of support, or well with god's help i am making it, or well i'm as good as can be expected. they really are just showing you that they care about your emotional state. feel free to say well i am not handling this too well if you want to. then the proper response should be well let us know if you need anything. i hope that helps and sorry for your loss hun.

Sorry to hear about your loss....

I guess it would depend on who was asking. If it was a good friend, someone you were close to, I would answer honestly and share how I was feeling, handling it all. If it was someone who I really didn't know, someone just being polite, I would say, I'm doing okay, a little better each day.

We better share glad news and bear suffering alone.
Most people already feel heavy for their lives, so it is no good to add loads to their minds.
Many friends come to the funeral of my mother as a happy occasion, and not as grieving at all, because she does not die, but starting a greater life in another world where we will meet again. And, it will be the same with my temporary existence on earth.

I tell them that my mother is no longer around. She has deceased october 29, 2001. I love her very much and I kinda miss her right now at the moment. No one can chastise me the way she could. No one can fill in her shoes. They can not be like her. I am thinking about her all the time even now years away. I feel hurt by her death still. I wish she was around more. One time I visited her grave site. She love me back. Even though she can't take care of me anymore cause she was too sick. Nice knowing you when you are around. Hopefully I can see you again in Heaven.

That's all.

I'm very sorry for your loss, I know it's a difficult time. If people ask how you are doing, it's ok to let them know how you feel. It's ok to say that you're having a tough time of it, and it's even ok to say that you don't want to talk about it, but thank them for their concern because these people actually do care.
