I have lymph-edema in my left leg from damage when I almost lost that leg. On bad days it pits, but I was in occupational therapy for it for about a year and I manage it with compression, compression therapy, a diuretic, and exercise. It's no longer painful for the most part unless I'm having a bad day... but that could be more from scar tissue. It is sometimes hard to differentiate where the pain is coming from. The edema starts above my knee and goes to my ankle. I no longer have issues with swelling in my feet. It is absolutely something you should see your doctor about if you haven't already. Like the answer before me, pain could definitely mean cellulitis and it's a very serious infection that needs treatment immediately before it enters your bloodstream.
