Prompts, for writing, I ask of thee fellow EP frequenters, and hurry if able!

Q&A Home   >  Community   >  WTK

I write a lot and I want some ideas from another source. It is somewhat dull always subjecting myself to my own ideas, so a fresh source would be very helpful. Give me a prompt, criteria, a challenge to complete, whatever... Be clever!

    1. Choose ten random letters of the alphabet and write them at the top of a blank page. then, write the beginning of your story with the words beginning with these letters in their order.

    2. Describe the longest, happiest, or most excruciating hour of your life without using abstractions such as fear, death, love, happy, upset, confused. Instead, infuse the piece with concrete words such as chair, flavor, sand, shingles, crack. Avoid words like pain, and embrace words like pane. If you can't see it, smell it, touch it, taste it or hear it, give it the old heave-ho. Notice how vivid the writing becomes when you force feeling to take concrete forms.

    3. Name something, someone. Start there.

    4. Electricity is a recent discovery. Write about twelve things to do when there is no power.

    5. Describe how you feel right now using only your sense of smell.

    6. Rewrite the tale of Snow White from the view of Bashful.

    7. Imagine your life is a book, now right the blurb for it.

    8. Write an excuse for not working today.

    9. You are in a room full of people. You are blind. Describe them using all your senses but sight.

    10. Write an exaggeration of an ailment or illness.

    11. Put Shaggy and BatGirl in an elevator. Begin.

Solve the conundrum of a future society in which the people have no privacy rights but crime is nonexistent during a changing of hands in the governing bodies to a more radical stance in policy. The story should concern a network security government employee who sees the means and effects of the all-seeing all-knowing government behind the scenes but is compelled to have no opinion of the matter.
