Thanks so much for sharing your story with us.

First of all - well done for speaking out and describing how you feel - thats a great step.

My suggestion would be to first go and see your local doctor and get them to suggest a specialist therapist for you to see. They cost a bit BUT you cant put a price on your life.

Second thing - if you need to be on medication and your doctor (who you trust) says you need to be then stay on it. Medication takes time to build up - stopping and starting wont help you at all. Youl be all over the place. If you are feeling numb - tell your doctor - it could be an initail side effect OR that particular medication might not be the right one for you. You dont want to feel numb you just want to feel at the right level to be able to deal with working on getting better.

Third - dont drink - it plays around with your happy levels - youll feel happy and then when it wears off you will have horrible lows.

Be honest and open with the people around you - be open to trying new strategies. Read about depression and make small changes daily to your life.

Life is good and I can tell from your post that you are a strong person who will take advice and will feel happiness again - remember to smile and that there is always someone to talk to out there - ALWAYS

Thinking of you - takecare - let us know how you go

I have been on lexapro for the past 5 years or so. I have tried going off it, but I always end up going back on it because I just function better on it. I have had to give up drinking to an extent due to the fact anti depressants and alcohol dont mix. If your depression is bad enough that it requires you to be on medication, than its worth it. You feeling emotionally stable is more important than having a few drinks.

hmm...that is a hard question to answer without being a trained doctor.

What you went through was really difficult and horrible but I don't think and this is strictly my opinion SO PLEASE DON'T HOLD ME TO IT--but I think that instead of being medicated to the point where you can't feel that maybe you should seek therapy. It might be better to discuss your feelings openly with a therapist or even a close friend. If a therapist/psychologist put you on the prozac maybe you should seek another doctor for a second opinion--one not so eager to med you up and send you away. Take the time to properly sort your feelings out(the good and bad), and know that not all guys are complete utter tools. I have had my fair share of jerks but I am currently in a relationship and its going on three years. It just took time and believe me I have shed my tears (of which there were MANY tears) and had to deal with the situation as best as I could with a clear head.

Theres some good advice on here for you. I feel i should contribute. Be honest with yourself are you at the point where you were considering suicide. If not, dont be on the medication. Being sad over being dumped is natural, its hard takes time to get over but this to shall pass. By dealing with the issue at hand and not taking medications you will learn vital coping skills that to be honest a lot of our generation doesnt have because of medication.

Prozac is mostly fluoride, and actually i say you shouldnt be on it unless your seriously considering killing yourself but it is well known that prozac along with many other antidepressents increase risk of suicide. It was something like 10 out of 300 and theres about 22 million people on it. Theres so many side affects, i wonder if your doctor went over them with you (my friends were not aware of them). Actually i hope you did the right thing and did your own research on the topic before your doctor convinced you to join the masses of over medicated people so said doctor could give you a little quick fix pill instead of doing their job.

Anyways, proper nutrition, exercise and some counseling is all you need unless your actually afraid your going to kill yourself then in that case there may be something to be alarmed about. Counselors or psychologists are what you should be after psychiatrists will just prescribe more drugs.

If you need to know more about nutrition and foods that will help let me know.

do the prozac. Not drinking or smoking you don't really have to do. I've been on so many psych meds and drink(and smoke) when they tell you not to and nothing happened because of it. You might have a lower tolerance/get drunk more easily that's about it.

It made me so numb . . . plus I gained about 25 pounds . . . that really helped with the depression :) . . . I found more effective things. Walking, crying, walking, yelling, beating the pillow, crying . . . . sleeping was the cure . . . I understand that it really helps heal the synapses in the brain . . .

I was on Prozac for over and year and was really glad to stop. It isn't for everyone . . . and there are lots of better drugs for your brain.

Find a really good doc to talk to . . . tell them how "YOU" feel . . . they are not the ones inside you.

And remember to be kind to yourself . . . breath . . . eat well . . . and rest. Sleep is vastly under rated.

Never quite lost the weight . . . but I didn't lose my mind either.

Your disappointment at being used and abused will pass; it is all part of the maturation processes; meantime do not take prozac as it has too many adverse side-effects.

Talk to your doctor about it. That's what you pay them for. Maybe you can try another med without the side effect.

I have been taking Prozac for a long time. I took it for three years before switching to Effexor. I was on Effexor for a year and was glad to get off of that and back on the Prozac. Prozac works by adjusting your body chemistry which could by it's self be a major contributor to your depression.
You should know that it does take about six weeks or more before you really start to feel the effects.
For me I feel better now than I have in a long time and I'm getting ready to begin a divorce.
The effects can vary greatly with the amount of the fluxotene in your blood stream. Your body will take a while to adjust to the drug and you may have to adjust your doseage accordingly.
If you are feeling numb you may need to cut back slightly on the doseage but if you just started give it the six weeks at least. You will feel much different after taking it for a while.
Always talk to your Doctor and as others have said a good therapist can help along with the medication to get you feeling better.
I am actually losing a little weight at this time.
Don't make ANY changes without talking to your Doctor first.
Best of luck. If you have any other questions I may be able to answer them. Just PM me.
