You Tube has "streams" of data, 16 of them in fact....

Depending on your sound settings, you can have the IP DATA (embedded in the streams) to be used by either the "default" sound card or, if applicable, the sound card driver....Yes sounds crazy, let me explain....

I'll assume you're running XP or WIN7 Under sound and audio properties, you should have a panel with a number of tabs on on....Click on the AUDIO tab.....Then SOUND PLAYBACK......(default device)....See if you have a second device there that you can use........

If so, try that one AND or, click on the ADVANCED tab, then PERFORMANCE...a Panel comes up showing where your HW accelerators are set....Make sure they're set to full.......

The reason is that sometimes your sound device can not break out the audio packets embedded in the IP STREAMS (You tube) and they treat that like any Audio file which is "bridged" to the head phone jacks, too.....

However, if the sound card processor is bold enough, and or if settings are correct, you should get You TUBE streams and hear the via head phones if their plugged in....

Lastly (and I don't think this is the case) but most of the head phones for "typical" use should be no less than "HIGH IMPEDANCE" which is nothing more than a transformer frequency match....Which means it will work fine for "Skype" but not for embedded data in the higher data rates like from YOUTUBE....

If you have netflix, that's a good test too....See if you can hear NETFLIX via your head phones....

If not, and you're certain you have the correct settings or have tried them all, swap out your head phones and get High Impedance.....Stay with those...

    Good luck

Youtube/anything else sounds a lot like a windows setting. Try this: right click on the volume control in the bottom right, then see if there is a 'playback devices' button. Open that up and hopefully it should show entries for headphones and speakers, see if you can right click the headphones and 'Set as Default Device'.

Yeah I tried doing that as well, it still lets sounds go through the speakers :(
