I've never considered that the ending is happy. It always struck me as depressing. No, it isn't happy to me. His friend, no matter how sick he was, is dead. Buck is now all alone. Many people can only hope to have the kind of friendship that the two of them had. I think that's why I found the ending so sad. His good friend died before living his dream.
