Racist Experiences...?

How many of you guys out there have experienced acts of racism?

It might have been in your school, workplace, in public places such as cinemas or restaurants, or just in your general community. Did it involve you directly (i.e: you were the victim or the perpetrator) or indirectly (you witnessed it from a distance.)? In what country did it occur?

I'd just like to know how common racism is in a modern society and in which countries it most commonly occurs... Thank you. :)

I used to live in a part of the US where I was the only non-white person (I'm indian).

When a boy from Bangladesh moved to our area and started attending our school, everyone told us that "we go together because we both have brown skin"

I think a person would have to have their head buried in the sand like an ostrich not to see that racism is very common. It's sad that the very people who should know better...the courts and law enforcement officers...are often the worst offenders.

i don't know where to begin. i have witnessed so many.

having said that, what is the opposite of racism? if i can witness racism, can i also witness the opposite of racism? or, once we start talking about "race", do we create a sensitivity about our differences and not about our similarities?

i think that the opposite of racism woudl have to be explained by an attitude of indifference to another person's color... which i would also like to note that i have seen plenty of.

what are your thoughts on that?

This was years ago, took place at a restaurant. A waitress made a comment under her breath as we were leaving directed at my gay friends. Happened here in good ole UT.

In US, some kid made rude comments on my being in an interracial relationship. That actually happened twice.

I live in the USA, in New York city. I go out of my way not to do any behavior that could be interpreted as racist. I can't say I even remember witnessing an act of racism in my city. I do see it on TV in other places though.

I've actually never experienced racism directed at me.

Maybe I have, but I'm just oblivious to it. I'll just chalk it up to rudeness, of which their is plenty in the world.

Colorblindness was one suggestion for the opposite of racism. Another term I found for the opposite of racism, which I thought was more appropriate, was racial nihilism. This was defined as the rejection and repudiation of all racial distinctions and values.

Yes, in England, Scotland, France, Germany, USA, Sweden, Austria.
I'm white and the racism came from other whites.
