It stems from when the US declared independence from UK. In England the parliamentary colouring system is the opposite, blue = right and red= left. The Americans wanting to break ties completely opted to change the system around. It is also how they came to drive on the wrong side of the road. If you look at some old paintings (16/17th century) depicting carriages in towns and cities in Southern States such as Savannah, Charleston etc, all of which were first colonised by the English, you will see that the carriages of the time were being driven on the left. The staying on left of course derives from the old tradition of keeping the right hand (sword hand) free. Hence why the groom is always on the right of the bride, and gentlemen always walked to the right of the lady<br />

Thnks for the info. However, I've tried to research this for a few "minutes" and it seems the two colors were not standardized here in the U.S. until the aftermath of the 2000 presidential election and have remained since.
