It goes along with democracy. People vote for the candidate that will give them the most "free" stuff. Not everybody, of course, but there is a large number of less educated / less intelligent people who will happily vote for whoever promises them the most pie in the sky.<br />

And since the current tax laws are such that 40% of the voters pay no income tax and therefore are not paying anything toward all these wonderful government benefits, and the people who are paying for the lion's share of it are only 5% of the vote it just gets easier and easier to get elected by giving away other people's money.<br />

The government is not greedy, it's the people in the government. Power corupts and absolute power corupts absolutely! The more powerful a person or persons become, the more apt they are to misuse their power.
