The Texas state's school board is considering a new anti-evolution curriculum that could affect how the subject is taught throughout the country. Should creationism and evolution be taught side by side?

I say yes, and let's not stop there. Let's teach alchemy alongside chemistry, magic alongside physics, phrenology alongside neurology, and astrology alongside astronomy.

Let's teach the "controversy"....

not in a public school or a science class. if religious institutions want to to instill dogma into the heads of its willing parishoners that's fine. but if you are supposed to be teaching non-biased FACTS in a SCIENCE class, then NO absolutely not. there is scientific evidence to support that evolution occurred. you cannot teach "what some people believe" in place of "what IS".

That is a question for taxpayers to decide.

I believe "knowledge is power" and that young people should expose themselves to as many viewpoints on as many subjects as possible. This is not China where the government is fighting a losing battle to "mind control" its citizens.

If you want your child to learn creationism, Take them to church for the brainwashing. Don't teach that delusion to my kids.

If you're at a private/catholic school, then absolutely. If not, then no. There's only a small group of the society that truly believes creationism, so to teach it as fact doesn't make sense. I mean, what about the thoughts that other religions have about how things came about? In a public school you'd have to teach them all then because otherwise it translates into prejudice for leaving other religious theories out. In public school science class though, lets stick to science.

Creationism is less relevant than mythology. Keep it solely in churches. School is for learning facts and truth, not religious dogma and faith.

93% of scientists are atheist and 99% are evolutionists.

Creationism has absolutely no place outside churches. To think humans rode dinosaurs like the Flinstones, in spite of the billions of years of fossil evidence, no thanks. You can keep that unique kind of crazy in the church.

Uhm - does creationism fit the guidelines for a theory?
Does creationism have any scientific basis?
Does creationism make any sense?
God did create the heavens and earth - How? is the question. I suppose he did it using the scientific principles He created.
Creationism supposes He waved a magic wand or something.
If we believe creationism we will do away with geologists. Paleantologists, biologists, zoologists. and just about all scientific explanations there are. The God I know is not as stupid as the creationists I know. The God I know used scientific methods to create the heavens and earth.

No. Highside is not really giving the full story I don't think - science is not really "divided" on the "creation vs evolution" debate. *Very* few credible scientists would support creationism.
The story of creation should be taught in religious studies next to other creation myths which all do have something to teach us, just not as a science - for example, the Australian Aboriginal's creation myth of the Rainbow Serpant.

Actually, i think so. It's unfair to teach kids one side of the story.
People have the choice as to what they believe in. If let's say creationism is taught to kids, it's the only thing they know, and it's what they believe in. Then it's not giving them a choice in some respects..

i think if creationism is taught along side evolution, children will be able to decide for themselves, because they don't know more about one and less of the other.

I agree with Highside. If you teach one, you have to teach the other. What are they afraid of? Teach both versions and let people decide what to believe. It should be personal. I've been on both sides, exposed completely by both evolution and creationism. It didn't ruin me. I know what I believe.

Scientists are not divided on this one. Leaving aside the handful of quacks, the VAST majority of scientists accept evolution as a fact. Creationism is mythology. It is not fact based.

As for "teaching both sides" of the issue, this is just what the cigarette companies did for years: act like there is a real debate, when really the overwhelming evidence supports one side (evolution).

Well Creationism definitely shouldn't be promoted as a science. It should be clear that Evolution is taught as science and Creationism is taught as religion. That way, everyone's happy and nobody gets confused.

Of course you'd have to teach the Christian beliefs alongside all the other major religions, with a footnote that there are other minor religions (Scientology, etc.)which are equally valid that we don't have time to teach, but read the book if you're interested.

Science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses observation and experimentation to describe and explain natural phenomena. That is, science is concerned with facts acquired through use of the scientific method. A fact is proved by the scientific method when repeated experiments yield the same result

Creationism and Evolution are both theories advanced to explain observed phenomena. Theories are abstract and conceptual, and to this end they are never considered right or wrong. Instead, they are supported or challenged by observations in the world.

Since neither Creationism nor Evolution can be subjected to the scientific method; science cannot prove or disprove either theory, rather both are more appropriately addressed by philosophic inquiry using logic and thought.

Whether many or a majority of scientists believe Evolution is true, their belief, such as it is, is personal philosophy, and not based upon the scientific method.

Whether one believes man was created, or that he was an accident from natural forces, neither belief can be “proved” by the scientific method. It is therefore false to assert that Evolution has been proven to be true by science.

It therefore follows that if one is taught, the other should also.
