Resolved Question

Should I go out with my family on Sabbath?

Hello. I have a problem and I would like some advice. This Saturday is my Grandmother's 65th birthday and to celebrate, my entire family is going out to breakfast and then to a movie. None of my family are SDA except for me and I am torn. I want to honor my grandmother and spend valuable time with my family (most of which I don't ever see) but I also don't want to break the Sabbath by going out to breakfast and to the movie. I am really torn about this. What do you think? My mother thinks I should "honor thy mother and father" and go to the breakfast but I want to "remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy" as well.

What does keeping the Sabbath mean to you? To me the Sabbath is the Lord's day of rest. You still have to feed the cat and dog. You still have to eat. Sabbath is a day of rest, what better way to rest, than to spend time with your family. Is it not restful to be with those you love? Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy is a spiritual state not a physical one.

Keeping the sabbath doesn't mean that to only go to church. That's not breaking the Sabbath; it's spending time with a person that you love. I am also a SDA. It's not bad at all.

Jesus said that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

I agree with KinkyFlower. Isn't the time you spend with your family holy in your religion?!

What is unholy about honoring your grandmother, I would ask?

What does your inner Heart say?

Myself, I don't see a problem with going to the breakfast; but of course I'm not SDA... this is where specific doctrines can get one confused. I once boarded with a Baptist as a teenager; and my bicycle chain had come off and I didn't quite know how to go about putting it back on. My Baptist landlord said "I could help you, but its the Sabbath..." and I was most nonplussed at his professed inability to help another "because it was the Sabbath". (He was looking upon it as "work").

I don't believe that is in line with "good, loving neighbourly practice", which is supposed to be what religion is promoting... isn't it?

You can go out with family and remember God much more on Sabbath. Goodness comes from your heart, not from any places.

I agree with all here......Go with Granny.....If you saw someone that needed daid...Would you say...Sorry....But this is the Lords day...and I must keep it holy....

Go be with Grams....and then do to shurch next week....And you could also read the Good Book after the family thing....And that way you could do both....YOu would be able to Honor God...and your family all on the same day

I would attend the breakfast but skip the movie. I believe that our Heavenly Father would not want us to seperate from our family - but the Sabbath Day is should be spend mostly with Him.

That thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day; for verily this is a day appointed unto you to rest from your labors, and to pay thy devotions unto the Most High". Other Sabbath-day activities may include praying, meditating, studying the scriptures and the teachings, writing letters to family members and friends, reading wholesome material, visiting the sick and distressed, and attending other Church meetings.

Gee, I remember "honor thy mother and father" being written in the bible.

And...what page does the bible mention "movies?"

Being with family, seems pretty spiritual, to me.

If the idea of going out and therefore influencing others to break the Sabbath as well (as is the primary reason why people in my specific denomination don't 'go out' or purchase anything on the Sabbath) makes you uncomfortable (or if it makes you uncomfortable at all regardless of why), then I would probably not do it.
I understand the conflict, though. I've had lots of difficult situations similar to this because of my beliefs.
Perhaps you could offer to make breakfast for everyone instead of needing to go out? A special family meal is special no matter where it is.
I guess I would say to not go out and explain it as your father in Heaven wants you to observe and respect His Holy day and that His will (perhaps unfortunately to your family) comes before that of your earthly parents. Try to come up with ways to make the time spent with your family still possible, though, if you can.
