I stick to the standby answer when in doubt, flip a coin heads -do it, tails -do it....if you break your head or heart in the process well that is what super glue is for... ie. a friend thats got a shoulder to cry on or take you to the emergency room.

Look, when people say they are 'listening to their heart' they are talking metaphorically.

The earlier reptile brain on top of which our cortex sits has no capability for words, language, or symbology with which to think or communicate. It uses emotions.

Listening to your heart means taking notice of the emotional response to a stimulus that this earlier, primitive brain is producing. It has thought about things, and that emotion is the response.

Quite old research shows that much of what we consider 'intellectual' thinking, in our modern cortexes, is very often nothing more than rationalisation of this wordless thought. Our rational thinking apparatus is not so advanced as we like to think.

Emotions are not related to your heart. We can't consciously place them in the correct place, and they were mis-ascribed to the heart in early times.

The thinking that your wordless self does is not primitive nor trivial. It should have equal weight with those thoughts we can directly manipulate (because they are in the form of a language).

Go with your gut - it never lies

both. if they match up then all is great. if not, wait a while. depends on the situation to. if someone bgins running at you outside a nightclub with a big knife and your gut says run, then you should probably run rather than stand there trying to think about it. Or if your heart says "i love this guy" despite reading a dirty email he'd just sent to your best friend behind ur back, then you should probably use ur brain and leave the crappy bastard. just examples.
