Resolved Question

Should I read Lord of the Rings?

I read the Fellowship of the Ring like two or three years ago, and while I didn't hate it, I wasn't riveted either. I'm getting into fantasy and I feel like I'm sort of obligated to read it, but I guess on the whole I prefer medieval-esque settings with a lot of sex and violence, and LOTR just isn't...uh, that.

it is a wonderful peice of literature-- i loved it. so based on that, i'de say yes. on the other hand, if you're simply going to slog through it out of a sense of obligation, you're not really going to get anything from it anyway. so read it if you feel like it- it is an awesome book.

It takes a certain reader to get through all three books. I'm a huge fan of British Literature so the pages flip with ease.

Some people need pictures to keep themselves stimulated in a story. If they want to pat the bunny all their life because they are too undisciplined to sit still for ten minutes and pay attention to what they're reading it's their loss.

Don't bother. It doesn't get any better after Fellowship of the Ring.

Sounds like you'll consider it a chore so don't do it. There are no literature police. That I know of anyway.

Why not? Worst thing that can happen is that you don't like the book. Personally, I like the series, and I love fantasy books as well, but I think you should at least give it a try.

Yeah , gave a go . The book is better then the film . Tolken who wrote it lived where i do and a lot of the places in the book bear referance to places in the local area like the two towers are water towers .The place has changed alot since his day and is now a complete **** hole . Today he would have wrote Lord of The Ring Piece or The Fellowship Of The Crack Pipe. Another good thing about the book is if you dont like it you wont have to buy toilet paper for about 3 years , even if you use a double sheet.

No. I mean I've read it, and it's not a bad book. But I firmly believe a person should stick to reading the kinds of books they enjoy. I don't think anyone should read a book because they "have to" to be a "true fan" of some genre or another. Only kids should be forced to read some books in school, and that's another whole issue.

You can love fantasy, and only be into certain kinds of it. I think it's rare to like ALL kinds of fantasy. While it's great to try something new, see if you like it etc, once in awhile. That doesn't sound like what you're wanting to read LOTR for though. Don't let yourself be bullied into reading something that's not what you enjoy. Stick with what you like; life's too short for anything else.

I couldn't get into the Fellowship of the Ring much either, but I love the Lord of the Rings. It seemed to pick up a bit in The Two Towers. When I'm unsure about a book, I try to read about 100 pages into it. If I'm not interested by then, it's pretty unlikely that I'll become interested later.
